2011 Tennessee Women's Hall of Fame

2011 Inductee: Pat Summit

Jane EskindPat Summitt has coached the Lady Vols basketball team for nearly four decades and kept it among the nation's elite programs. She has an incredible 1,071 wins against just 199 losses, eight NCAA Championships and 31 combined Southeastern conference titles, and serves as a shining example in the sport of collegiate basketball. Summitt has won more basketball games than any other coach in NCAA basketball history; man or woman.

Pat Summitt's character and values are conveyed to everyone with whom she has contact, especially to the young lives she touches every day. Billie Moore, Coach of the Silver Medal winning 1976 U.S. Women's Olympic basketball team, who coached a young Pat Summitt on that team, said it best. "Pat has never compromised her principles and that is why she has been such a good influence on these young athletes. She sets the standard of operating at the highest level of integrity and she never waivers from it. These young women embrace that kind of integrity and they can see that you do not have to take short cuts to do the right thing. There are many opportunities to let the bar down, but Pat has never done that. These young women could not have a better influence on their lives than Pat Summitt."

The Lady Vols who complete their eligibility at Tennessee have a 100% graduation rate. Her players speak of the opportunities afforded them in their careers because of the life lessons they received under Summitt's leadership. She is truly a mentor, leader and legend.
