2008 Scholarships Press/AnnouncementsWomen's Economic Council Foundation Offers ScholarshipsNASHVILLE, TN (October 21, 2008) - Six Tennessee students, including three non-traditional students, have been awarded the Women's Economic Council Foundation Scholarship, announced Dr. Carol Berz, Chair of the Women's Economic Council Foundation, Inc. and the Tennessee Economic Council for Women. The scholarships will be presented at the 5th Annual Economic Summit for Women on October 27, 2008 at the Airport Marriott in Nashville. Three $1,000 scholarships will be awarded to graduating high-school students and three will be awarded to women who are beginning or returning to college after having graduated from high school at least five years ago. Additionally, the Foundation and Council have partnered with the Girl Scouts of Middle Tennessee to present a $1,000 scholarship to a Girl Scout in recognition of the leadership training and dedication required to achieve the Girl Scout's Gold Award, the highest leadership honor in Girl Scouting. The recipient of this year's Girl Scout Scholarship is Rachel Dix of Murfreesboro, who has received the Girl Scout's Gold Award. "The applicants for these scholarships, who live in all parts of the State, are outstanding and deserving. We are very pleased with the response to the scholarship program and even more pleased to invest in these young women and their futures," said Patricia Pierce, co-chair of the Scholarship Committee. FOUNDATION AWARDS SCHOLARSHIPS"Education is the foundation for improving our economic status. The Foundation is very excited to have the opportunity to contribute financially to help women do what we encourage them to do: continue their education. This is an investment that will pay dividends for all of us," said Dr. Berz. The Economic Summit for Women provides women from across the State with information to improve their personal and professional lives and the opportunity to network with others from a variety of backgrounds and careers. This year's program will include former United States Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, internationally-acclaimed author and leadership expert Robin Gerber and nationally-recognized motivational speaker Delores Pressley.
